Visitors For business or Pleasure ("B-1/B-2")

Generally, a citizen of a foreign country who wishes to enter the United States must first obtain a visa, either a nonimmigrant visa for temporary stay, or an immigrant visa for permanent residence. The "visitor" visa is a nonimmigrant visa for persons desiring to enter the United States temporarily for business (B-1) or for pleasure or medical treatment (B-2).

Travelers coming to the US for tourism or business for 90 days or less from qualified countries may be eligible to visit the US without a visa if they meet the visa waiver program requirements.

B-2 Visas are used to enter the United States either for pleasure (as a tourist) or for medical treatment. Under old rules, the length of time granted for a stay under a B-2 visa was six months. New rules set "a period of time that is fair and reasonable for the completion of the purpose of the visit."

Duration of Mexican Border Crossing Cards extended to 30 days. Entry at a land border crossing point from Mexico or Canada is permitted under and covered by the visa waiver program. Travelers who apply for entry at a land border crossing point are not required to present round-trip transportation tickets or arrive at the border entry point aboard a carrier who has signed an agreement with the US to participate in the visa waiver program.
