Diversity Lottery

In order to maintain equal distribution of nations, there is a Diversity Lottery Program which allocates 55,000 new immigrant visas each year for individuals from underrepresented nations. A nation is considered underrepresented if less than 50,000 people from that nation immigrated to the US in the past five years.

The procedure to apply under this category is simple. To be eligible, one should have had high school education or two years work experience within the last five years. If one of the couple belongs to the under-represented nation, it gives the eligibility to participate. The selection is made by random picking up and not any merit.

Instructions to apply under this category are issued every year in August and the registration usually begins in early October. To apply, one needs to submit only a letter detailing his/her personal information, exactly as per instructions. Winners will be notified by mail at the addresses given.

If selected under this category, one will be allowed to bring the spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21.
